The Lantern Festival marks the first full moon of the Lunar New Year. In ancient times, the first month of the lunar calendar was called "Yuan Yue" (元月), and the night was called "Xiao" (宵), hence the 15th day of the first lunar month became known as "Yuan Xiao Festival" (元宵節). According to tradition, people eat a bowl of glutinous rice balls, symbolizing reunion and completeness, on this special day.
Whether you're enjoying sweet glutinous rice balls (Yuanxiao) or savory tangyuan, these treats are often high in fat, sugar, and calories. Overindulgence can be a burden on your health. For example, 4 sweet yuanxiao or 5 savory tangyuan contain as many calories as a bowl of white rice. A 60kg adult would need to walk slowly (4 km/h) for about 1.5 hours or climb all 2,000 steps of Taipei 101 to burn off the calories. Even small red and white tangyuan, often considered lighter, aren’t so innocent—eating 20 of them equals half a bowl of rice.
Director Wu Chao-Chun of the Health Promotion Administration advises the public to enjoy yuanxiao or tangyuan in moderation using three smart principles: eat less, substitute smartly, and eat wisely. That way, you can strike a balance between festive flavors and health.
Yuanxiao vs. Tangyuan: Different Preparations, Same Calorie Trap
Both yuanxiao and tangyuan are made from glutinous rice. Tangyuan are made by mixing glutinous rice flour with water to form dough—originally in the form of small, unfilled red and white balls. Later, filled versions became popular. Yuanxiao, on the other hand, are made by cutting solid fillings and repeatedly rolling them in dry rice flour, resulting in a rougher appearance. Regardless of how they’re made, overconsumption can easily lead to excessive calorie intake.
Director Wu reminds everyone to apply the above tips when cooking or eating yuanxiao and tangyuan. Don’t forget to take a walk with family or friends or enjoy the lantern displays outdoors—light activity promotes digestion and boosts your metabolism.Wishing you a joyful Lantern Festival filled with harmony and happiness!
